The Espace Diamant is a large, interconnected ski area in the heart of the French Alps, offering spectacular views of Mont Blanc. It links five charming and traditional Savoie villages: Les Saisies, Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe, Praz sur Arly, Flumet, and Crest-Voland. Unlike many purpose-built French resorts, this area retains an authentic alpine character, with pistes winding through forests and past traditional farms. It is particularly celebrated for its family-friendly atmosphere and expansive, scenic terrain that caters exceptionally well to recreational skiers.
Skiing and Terrain in Espace Diamant
The ski area boasts a substantial 192 kilometres of marked pistes, all accessible on a single lift pass and connected by a network of 80 ski lifts. The terrain spans a respectable altitude range, from the base villages around 1000 metres up to a top elevation of 2069 metres, providing a total vertical drop of 1069 metres. The moderate altitude contributes to the area’s character, with a significant number of beautiful tree-lined runs that offer shelter and improved visibility on snowy days.

Beginners and Families
With 132 km of easy runs, this is one of France’s premier destinations for beginners and families. Each village has its own dedicated nursery slopes and gentle progression areas. The wide, uncrowded pistes allow learners to practise their turns in a relaxed environment, while the extensive network of blues means they can quickly progress to exploring further afield.
Intermediates
Intermediate skiers will find more than enough to keep them entertained. The 49 km of red runs provide a good challenge, and the real joy lies in the ability to ski from one valley to the next, exploring the unique character of each village. It’s an ideal area for those who enjoy covering distance and taking in the scenery.
Advanced Skiers
While not a primary destination for experts, Espace Diamant does offer some challenges. The 11 km of black runs are genuinely steep, and when snow conditions are good, there is excellent and accessible off-piste terrain to be found amongst the trees. However, skiers seeking a vast number of steep, demanding pistes may find the options limited.
Ski Season and Snow Conditions
The ski season in Espace Diamant typically runs from mid-December through to mid-April. While its top altitude is not the highest in the Alps, the resort of Les Saisies benefits from a renowned microclimate that often delivers exceptional snowfall, earning it the nickname ‘the snow-loft of Savoie’. Extensive snowmaking facilities also cover key pistes to ensure reliable connections between the villages for the duration of the season.
Practical Information for Visitors
Located in the Val d’Arly, Espace Diamant is easily accessible from Geneva, Chambéry, and Lyon airports. A day pass for the entire linked area costs approximately €50, offering great value for the extent of the terrain. For those not wishing to explore the full circuit, cheaper lift passes are also available for the individual sectors. The villages themselves offer a quieter, more traditional French alpine experience compared to the larger mega-resorts, with a focus on local charm and hospitality.
