What ‘biggest’ really means

Most of these giants are linked ski areas — several resort villages connected by lifts and pistes under a single lift pass. Les 3 Vallées in France, for example, joins Courchevel, Méribel, Les Menuires and Val Thorens into one immense network. That connectivity, rather than the height of any single mountain, is what puts these areas at the top.

FAQ

What is the biggest ski resort in the world?

By total marked piste length, Les 3 Vallées – Val Thorens/Les Menuires/Méribel/Courchevel in France is among the largest, with around 600 km of pistes.

Are the biggest ski areas good for beginners?

Large linked areas usually have plenty of beginner terrain alongside advanced runs, but they can feel overwhelming. Beginners should base themselves near the nursery slopes and build up gradually.

Does a bigger ski area mean better skiing?

Not necessarily. Bigger areas offer more variety and less repetition, but snow quality, lift efficiency and the character of a resort matter just as much for a good trip.
