An Introduction to KitzSki

The KitzSki area, linking the world-famous town of Kitzbühel with the charming village of Kirchberg, is one of Austria’s most celebrated and extensive winter sports destinations. Nestled in the Kitzbühel Alps, it combines a vast, modern ski network with the traditional charm of Tyrolean mountain life. Renowned for hosting the annual Hahnenkamm World Cup downhill race, the resort offers a unique blend of challenging terrain, gentle cruising slopes, and a vibrant atmosphere that attracts skiers and snowboarders from across the globe.

The Skiing & Terrain

KitzSki provides a substantial and varied ski domain with 188 kilometres of marked pistes served by a network of 58 modern lifts. The terrain spans a significant vertical drop of 1,200 metres, with slopes descending from a top elevation of 2,000 metres right down to the valley floor at 800 metres. This ensures long, satisfying runs for all abilities.

The piste breakdown is exceptionally well-balanced, offering something for everyone:

  • Easy (Blue): 102 km
  • Intermediate (Red): 66 km
  • Advanced (Black): 20 km

The area is famed for the legendary ‘Streif’ downhill race course on the Hahnenkamm mountain, considered one of the most demanding in the world. Beyond this single piste, the interconnected mountains offer wide-open bowls, tree-lined runs, and scenic trails that connect the various sectors, including Jochberg and Pass Thurn, creating a seamless skiing experience.

Who It Suits

KitzSki’s diverse terrain makes it an excellent choice for a wide range of skiers.

Beginners

With over half the terrain marked as easy, beginners are extremely well catered for. Dedicated nursery slopes with practice lifts are available at the base stations in both Kitzbühel and Kirchberg, providing safe and gentle environments to build confidence. Once comfortable, the vast network of wide, cruising blue runs allows for easy progression and exploration.

Intermediates

Intermediate skiers will find KitzSki to be a paradise. The 66 kilometres of red runs offer endless opportunities for cruising and honing skills. The resort’s ‘Ski Safari’ route is a popular challenge, guiding skiers on a tour across the entire ski area without skiing the same slope twice.

Advanced & Expert Skiers

While the 20 kilometres of black pistes may seem modest, they include some of the most iconic challenges in the Alps. The main attraction is, of course, the Streif (Piste 21). Beyond the marked runs, the area offers numerous marked ski routes and accessible off-piste opportunities when conditions permit, providing plenty of adventure for experts.

Ski Season & Snow Reliability

The ski season in Kitzbühel and Kirchberg typically runs from early December through to mid-April. While the top altitude of 2,000 metres is not the highest in Austria, the resort has invested heavily in one of the most extensive snowmaking systems in the Alps. This technology covers the majority of the pistes, ensuring reliable snow cover on the lower slopes and key connecting runs throughout the season, even during periods of lower natural snowfall.

Practical Information

Kitzbühel is easily accessible, located between the major airports of Innsbruck (approx. 1.5 hours), Salzburg (approx. 1.5 hours), and Munich (approx. 2 hours). The town also has its own train station with excellent connections. A day pass for the KitzSki area costs approximately €83, with discounts available for multi-day passes. The area is also part of the Super Ski Card, which grants access to over 20 surrounding ski regions. The towns themselves offer distinct atmospheres; Kitzbühel is known for its historic, upscale centre and lively après-ski scene, while Kirchberg provides a more traditional and relaxed village experience.
