Les Gets is a terrific family-friendly ski resort next-door to Morzine and Avoriaz in the extensive Les Portes du Soleil area. While "family-friendly resort in France" sometimes conjures images of purpose-built concrete monstrosities, Les Gets may be the exception to the rule. With over 650km of pistes, the Portes du Soleil area is one of the world's largest ski areas, comprising over a dozen interconnected villages. The part of the ski area closest to Les Gets lends itself best to beginners and intermediates, with a whole section of the mountain (the probably-not-ironically-named Le Grand Cry) dedicated to children. There's no shortage of challenging terrain here either, and the mile-hungry will find few ski areas in the world that offer so much scope to explore.
