An Introduction to the Skicircus

The Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn is one of Austria’s largest and most popular linked ski areas. This vast winter playground connects the Glemmtal valley in Salzburgerland, home to Saalbach and Hinterglemm, with Leogang and, across the border in Tyrol, the freeride hub of Fieberbrunn. Known for its state-of-the-art lift system and extensive, varied terrain, the Skicircus offers a seamless skiing experience across multiple mountains and valleys, all on a single lift pass.

The Skiing & Terrain

Boasting an impressive 270 kilometres of pistes, the Skicircus provides an enormous amount of terrain to explore. The area is serviced by 69 modern lifts, including high-speed gondolas and chairlifts, designed to move skiers efficiently around the circuit. The ski area spans a significant vertical range, from a base elevation of 830 metres up to a top station at 2,096 metres, delivering a total vertical drop of 1,266 metres.

The layout is cleverly designed as a circuit, allowing skiers to travel clockwise or anti-clockwise around the Glemmtal valley, taking in the slopes of Saalbach and Hinterglemm. The addition of Leogang and Fieberbrunn has expanded the area even further, adding quiet, tree-lined runs and challenging off-piste terrain to the mix. The sheer scale means there is always a new piste or valley to discover.

Who It Suits

The Skicircus has a well-deserved reputation for catering to all ability levels, but it particularly excels for intermediates and beginners.

  • Beginners: With 140 kilometres of blue runs, more than half the total terrain is designated as easy. Each village has excellent nursery slopes and dedicated learning zones at the base, as well as gentle cruising runs higher up the mountain to progress to.
  • Intermediates: This is paradise for intermediate skiers. The 112 kilometres of red runs provide endless opportunities for long-distance cruising. Strong intermediates can easily tackle one of the designated ski circuits in a day, such as ‚The Challenge‘, which covers the entire area.
  • Advanced: While the 18 kilometres of black runs make up a smaller portion of the total, there are still plenty of challenges. These include the World Cup run at the Zwölferkogel and steep pistes under the Schattberg gondola. Furthermore, Fieberbrunn is a world-renowned freeride destination, offering extensive and easily accessible off-piste opportunities for expert skiers and snowboarders.
  • Families: The abundance of gentle slopes, dedicated family-friendly areas, and excellent ski schools make the entire region a fantastic choice for family ski holidays.

Ski Season & Snow Reliability

The winter season in Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn typically runs from early December through to early April. While the top altitude of 2,096 metres ensures good snow conditions at higher elevations, the resort has invested heavily in one of the most comprehensive snowmaking systems in the Alps. This technology ensures that the lower-altitude runs and crucial valley connections remain well-covered throughout the season, providing reliable skiing from start to finish.

Practical Information

Access to the ski area is straightforward via any of the four main villages. Saalbach and Hinterglemm are known for their vibrant and bustling atmosphere with a world-famous après-ski scene. Leogang offers a quieter, more family-oriented base, while Fieberbrunn attracts a dedicated freeride crowd. A single lift pass covers the entire 270-kilometre area, with a day pass costing around €79.0. The region is easily accessible, with Salzburg Airport being the most convenient international gateway.
