An Introduction to Megève
Nestled in the heart of the French Alps with breathtaking views of Mont Blanc, the linked ski area of Megève and Saint-Gervais offers a classic alpine experience steeped in history and charm. Unlike many purpose-built resorts, this area is centred around authentic mountain villages. Megève is renowned for its chic, traditional atmosphere and cobbled, car-free streets, while Saint-Gervais-les-Bains is a historic spa town. Together, they provide access to a vast and varied ski domain that prioritises scenic cruising over steep-and-deep challenges, making it a favourite for discerning skiers.
The Skiing & Terrain
The Megève ski area boasts a substantial 185 kilometres of marked pistes, all connected by a network of 60 lifts. The terrain is spread across several mountains, including Mont d’Arbois, Rochebrune, and Le Jaillet, offering diverse skiing experiences. The vertical drop is significant, descending 1,503 metres from the highest point at 2,353 metres down to the valley floor at 850 metres.
The piste breakdown heavily favours intermediate skiers, with a generous mix for beginners and a smaller selection for experts:
- Easy (Blue) Slopes: 70 km
- Medium (Red) Slopes: 90 km
- Hard (Black) Slopes: 25 km
Much of the skiing takes place on picturesque, tree-lined runs that offer shelter and good visibility in poor weather. Higher up, the terrain opens into wide, rolling bowls perfect for long, cruising descents. The extensive network allows for enjoyable journeys across the domain, stopping at charming mountain restaurants along the way.
Who is Megève Best For?
With its extensive network of gentle and intermediate slopes, Megève is particularly well-suited to certain types of skiers.
Beginners & Families
With 70 km of easy slopes and numerous dedicated nursery areas at village level and higher up the mountain, the area is an excellent choice for first-time skiers and families. The gentle, wide pistes provide a safe and encouraging environment to build confidence.
Intermediates
This is where the resort truly excels. With 90 km of red runs, intermediates have a vast playground to explore. The ability to ski from one village to another across rolling, scenic terrain makes it an ideal destination for those who love to cover distance and enjoy the journey.
Advanced Skiers
While not primarily known as an expert’s paradise, the 25 km of black runs offer sufficient challenges for advanced skiers. The World Cup downhill run on Mont d’Arbois is a highlight. Furthermore, when conditions are right, there is excellent off-piste potential through the trees and in the higher alpine bowls for those with the right experience and equipment.
Ski Season & Snow Conditions
The ski season in Megève typically runs from mid-December through to mid-April. The base elevation of 850 metres is relatively low, which can mean that snow cover in the villages can be variable, particularly at the beginning and end of the season. However, the majority of the skiing is located well above this, reaching up to 2,353 metres where snow conditions are generally much more reliable. The resort also has extensive snowmaking facilities to ensure key pistes remain open throughout the season.
Practical Information for Visitors
The ski area is easily accessible, located just over an hour’s drive from Geneva Airport, making it a popular choice for weekend trips as well as longer holidays. An adult day pass for the local Megève area costs approximately €63.50. Visitors can choose to stay in either of the main villages. Megève offers a more upmarket, boutique experience, while Saint-Gervais provides a slightly more relaxed, family-oriented spa town atmosphere. Both provide excellent access to the slopes and a wonderful alpine ambience.
