A front moving SE across France and Germany on Friday will bring the first snow of 2020 into the Northern and Eastern Alps from Saturday morning, with a second front sweeping down from the Arctic into Austria on Saturday night bringing some heavy snowfalls and strong winds over the weekend. A high pressure system will then dominate all of Alps until Tuesday night when the remnants of a front coming in from the Atlantic on the jetstream will bring a small dusting to most of the resorts in the Northern Alps.
Temperatures will fall sharply over the weekend along with the arrival of the northerly airflow bringing the weekend’s snow and winds to Austria. The mainly clear skies across the entire region from Monday mean that the temperatures at night will remain cold all week long and the snowpack will refreeze and shed moisture every night, meaning that pistes should stay in excellent shape, and that people looking for powder in the Western Alps should have no problem finding it, provided they’re willing to go for a tour.
Moving in for a closer look we can see the first two fronts on Saturday dropping a decent bit of snowfall for the Northern and Eastern Alps on Saturday before being pushed out towards the East by high pressure on Sunday. From Monday, that high pressure system means all of the Alps will enjoy blue skies and sunshine before the weaker front moves into the Northern Alps on Tuesday night bringing some clouds and a bit of snowfall for Wednesday. From Thursday that front should clear up and we won’t see any more snowfall in the Alps for the rest of the week.
Looking at the icons for the week we see lots of sunshine with warmer temperatures in the South as areas like Les Deux Alpes benefit from a warm southwesterly airflow. Still, temperatures at night drop well below freezing which will be great for the snowpack. As we look at resorts further to the East we see a lot more snow and cloud on the charts along with a good bit of sunshine and very warm temperatures as we head into next weekend
Finishing up on our accumulated snowfall chart we see that the new snowfall this week is largely confined to the Northeast with large parts of Austria seeing upwards of 30-40cm over the weekend. Locally, parts of Northern Switzerland could see 20-30cm, other than that, snowfalls won’t be very significant, but that’s OK because we already have an amazing snowbase across the Alps.
